2006 Rhode Island E-Waste Law. In 2006, RI was added to the growing list of states that have adopted electronics recycling laws. RI’s Electronic Waste Law (effective in July 2006) established a disposal ban for “covered electronic products” beginning July 1, 2008. After July 1, 2008, such products must be disposed of as hazardous waste or by recycling.
“Covered electronic product” means:
(i) desktop computers (including CPUs); (ii) computer monitors (flat panel and CRTs); (iii) portable computers (laptops); (iv) combination units (CPUs with monitors) (v) both CRT and non-CRT based televisions; (vi) television (including plasma, LCD) or any similar video display device with a screen greater than 4 in. diagonally and contains a circuit board
RI DEM will be initiating a stakeholder group to discuss ways of establishing a covered electronic product collection, recycling and reuse program in Rhode Island. The results of the study/stakeholder process shall be presented to the RI General Assembly. Additional legislation on e-waste will likely be debated before the legislature in 2008.
